The Winnetu Oceanside Resort has a fascinating history…The first hotel at our site was built in 1874. A railroad once connected the hotel with the Steamboat Wharf in Oak Bluffs. Mattakesett was built in 1968 by Stanmar, Inc. and the Snider family. The name "Mattakesett" is a tribute to the original Mattakeset Lodge that flourished between 1874 and 1905 – and was located not far away from the present site.

The original Lodge was popular for its clambakes, dances under the stars, and, most importantly, its uniquely south-facing location by the sea, which was consistently cooled by the gentle sea breezes during the heat of summer.

Of course, today's Winnetu Hotel is quite modern, built in the year 2000 and the Mattakesett homes were built between 1968 and 1983. All of our accommodations offer the modern conveniences our 21st Century guests have come to expect. Our resort activities are extensive including a dedicated Children’s Program, Tennis Club, Heated Pools and Fitness Centre.
