About Wesley Shankland
Wesley Shankland, DDS, serves patients in the Westerville, Ohio area. His private practice, TMJ & Facial Pain Center, provides general dentistry as well as treatment for temporomandibular disorders and craniofacial pain problems. With a commitment to his patients’ overall health, Dr. Shankland works with chiropractors and other dental and medical practitioners to facilitate comprehensive care. TMJ & Facial Pain Center employs a dedicated staff of professionals; most have worked with Dr. Shankland for more than 20 years.
Dr. Shankland devotes much of his practice to the diagnosis and treatment of craniofacial disorders and the relief of pain. Utilizing surgical procedures, Dr. Shankland can remove osteocavitation lesions, which are hollow spaces in jaw bones that can produce pain in the facial area. Having worked for many years with patients with temporomandibular disorders, he discovered a third muscle in the temporomandibular joint called the zygomandibular, and offers treatments to relieve discomfort associated with it.
A longtime contributor to the Journal of Craniomandibular Practice, Dr. Shankland has published research on a number of topics, such as trigeminal neuralgia, temporomandibular disorders, and the various factors that contribute to anterior throat pain. His work has reached international audiences in the dental and craniofacial communities.
Dr. Wesley Shankland graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Zoology. Shortly after earning his undergraduate degree, Dr. Shankland was admitted to the university’s College of Dentistry and received his degree in 1978. He also holds a Master of Science in Anatomy from Ohio State and served as a faculty member there, instructing students in clinical endodontics classes.
Affiliated with many professional organizations, Dr. Wesley Shankland is a member of the Columbus Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. Outside of work, Dr. Shankland enjoys spending time with his family and practicing martial arts.
