Founded by Fred Carl, Jr., a fourth-generation building contractor, Viking Range Corporation is the world’s first producer of the hybridized range stove. Combining the best points of both commercial and home ranges, the company’s original range was designed and engineered to allow home cooks to produce restaurant-quality food in their own kitchen.
When Mr. Carl founded Viking Range in the early 1980s, no professional-style ranges existed for the home cook. Frustrated by his inability to find the range he wanted in his new home, he began the long journey to design and manufacture the first Viking ranges. After several years of exhaustive research, Viking Range submitted its first design to the American Gas Association in 1985. The testing process took over a year and involved the creation of several new tests and criteria, but in late 1986, Viking Range obtained the certification it needed to begin the manufacture and sale of its first line of appliances.
Viking Range products quickly gained popularity, and the company's growth soon forced it to move into its own manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Mississippi, Mr. Carl’s hometown. Today, Viking Range operates production and distribution facilities in Greenwood totaling more than 600,000 square feet. Despite this huge expansion, the company still remains close to its roots and its leaders still foster the same tight-knit community that Mr. Carl established in the 1980s.
Today, Viking Range manufactures and designs much more than ranges. The company also produces refrigerators, freezers, cooktops, warming drawers, outside cooking appliances, and a full range of culinary equipment like cutlery and other tools. Viking Range products are available in more than 80 countries around the world. In recent years, the company has also expanded to offer culinary instruction through the Viking Cooking School. In 2008 alone, over 70,000 novice and experienced cooks honed their skills at Viking Cooking School classes in locations around the country.
