Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, an Indian cricketer, was born on December 3, 1981 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Cricket is not new to him as he comes from a family of cricketers, which includes Venkatraman Sivaramankrishnan, his father who is the former Tamil Nadu opening batsman, and Venkatraman Ramnarayan, his uncle is also a cricketer who played for Hyderabad.
Though Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan was initially interested in hockey, he later made up his mind and chose to play cricket. He played cricket in school and although he started off his career in cricket as a left-arm orthodox spin bowler, he went on to become a full-time top order batsman. In 1996, his 100 run partnership with Abhinand Gopalan, his classmate, earned him a place in the List A team.
Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan represented Tamil Nadu at the Ranji Trophy and in a match against Delhi, he made a stunning 152 runs off just 122 balls with seventeen boundaries and three sixes, becoming the number 11 batsman from India and fourth in the world to score a first-class century. His impressive performances at the Ranji Trophy made him the opening batsman for Tamil Nadu in the following one day matches.
Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan was the opening batsman for India Seniors in the 2005 edition of the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, during which he scored an important 87 in the final match on October 13 held at the Punjab Cricket Association Ground, Mohali. At the Deodhar trophy, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan made 158 runs off 123 balls for South Zone against Central, and during the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy, in a one-day match against Andhra Pradesh, he scored a 100 and set up a 184-run partnership with M. Vijay, a team-mate. He has also represented the Rajasthan Cricket association President’s XI team and the Haryana cricket team.
Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan started his First-class cricket career in 1999-00 and went on to play altogether 42 First-class matches. In these matches, he scored 1884 runs, which includes three centuries and nine half-centuries and his highest score is 130 runs. As a bowler, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan has claimed a total of 86 wickets by giving 2523 runs out of the 4995 balls he bowled in all First-class matches he played.
During the 2003-04 season, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan started playing List A matches representing Tamil Nadu. He played in overall 47 List A matches, scoring 1326 runs, comprising of three centuries and six half-centuries, with an average of 37.88. The highest score of in the List A matches is 158 runs and striking rate is 92.27. With the ball in hand, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan claimed a total of 28 wickets by giving 916 runs from 1174 balls he bowled in List A matches.
Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan made his first Twenty20 (T20) match appearance in a match against the Andhra Pradesh team, which took place in Visakhapatnam on April 3, 2007. As of 2008, he has featured in eighteen Twenty20 matches making 301 runs, which includes thirty seven fours and eight sixes, with his highest score being 54. Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan has claimed twelve wickets giving 195 runs in Twenty20 matches.
In 2008, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan was selected to represent Chennai Super Kings at the Indian Premier League (IPL) and in a match against the Delhi Daredevils team he made a brisk half-century. He went on to play a total of nine matches, making 145 runs.
