About Venida Chenault

Venida Chenault - Professional Summary:

A respected community organizer and higher education administrator, Venida Chenault has served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Haskell Indian Nations University since 2004. Located in Lawrence, Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University offers a unique culture-based curriculum for American Indian students and provides baccalaureate programs in American Indian studies, teacher education, business administration, and environmental science. Prior to her executive promotion, Venida Chenault taught social work courses at the university as part of the American Indian Studies (AIS) program. Considered an expert in issues of alcohol and chemical dependency as they affect First Nations communities, as well as issues of violence and abuse against indigenous women, she also focuses on how to assess and provide effective counseling and community response to violence and abuse. Venida Chenault began her academic career at what was then known as Haskell Indian Junior College and later transferred to the University of Kansas to pursue advanced degrees in the social sciences. While pursuing her PhD in Social Work, Venida Chenault was recruited by her original alma mater to reestablish a dormant social work program after completing her graduate degree. At Haskell Indian Nations University, she contributed as an instructor and leader and shared in the university’s mission of providing a culturally respectful educational environment where American Indian students can achieve their personal and professional goals. Over the course of her career, Venida Chenault has earned a reputation as a prolific academic writer and speaker who remains unafraid to address contemporary issues of concern to indigenous communities. Her academic articles have explored such culturally relevant topics as how to honor traditional stories in the assessment and accreditation process, and her social work training modules have successfully integrated indigenous practices. Venida Chenault has presented at higher education conferences sponsored by the National Indian Education Association, the U.S. Department of Education, and other prominent organizations. An active participant in the tribal decision-making process, she currently chairs the Constitution Committee for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
