About Union Institute & University
Union Institute & University
Originally founded as a consortium of liberal arts colleges, Union Institute & University was established in 1964. The consortium, known as The Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities, included Bard College, Sarah Lawrence College, Hofstra University, and Antioch College. Promoting a student-centered curriculum of higher education for working adults, the school changed its name in the 1980s. Union Institute & University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. Union is also authorized as a degree-granting institution in Ohio, California, Florida, and Vermont. It offers a variety of programs at its academic centers in those states and also online options.
Chosen by individuals for its personalized and transformational academic programs, Union Institute & University offers flexibility, both in the schedule and delivery model, for students with careers, families, or community commitments. Combining traditional learning with mentorship, Union enables students to pursue a variety of majors and concentrations. In some programs, students work closely with academic experts to customize a desired course of study and research to meet learners’ needs. Faculty advisors provide mentorship and assist students in developing their educational path. Presenting accelerated degree options, the school endeavors to make education affordable for all students; at the undergraduate level, previous credits are transferable, and students can test out of prerequisite courses. The institution offers scholarships to U.S. military veterans, spouses, and their dependents.
Since its founding, Union Institute & University operations have expanded to include 400 members of staff and faculty; 2,000 current students; and more than 15,000 alumni. The institution nurtures a multicultural environment and operates as an Equal Opportunity Educator and Employer.
