Uday Kaul, a professional cricketer, is a left-handed wicket-keeper batsman. He was born on December 2, 1987 in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh and has a brother, Siddharth Kaul, who is also a professional cricketer. His father Tej Kaul played for the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team in the 1970s, and his mother Sandhya Kaul was a gymnast, and they both work for the Sports Authority of India.
Uday Kaul represented the Indian Under-17 (U-17) side in the 2004 Asia Cup Under-17 tournament. In the Group I match in the second phase against Bahrain, he scored an unbeaten 208, which helped the Indian side win the match by a whopping 292 runs margin. He also represented India at the U-19 level and played for it during the Under-19 Cricket series in Pakistan.
At the Domestic level, Uday Kaul has played for the Punjab Under-14 side before beginning his ‘First-Class’ career against Hyderabad on December 9, 2005 at Mohali. On November 23, 2007, in the 3rd-round tie of the Ranji Trophy Super League round-up against Uttar Pradesh, he scored 151 not out to help Punjab recover from 17 for 3 and post a competitive score 342 for 7 by the end of the first day.
Uday Kaul made his ‘List A’ debut for Punjab in Delhi on February 14, 2006 against Jammu & Kashmir. On February 28, 2008, in the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy One Day tournament Uday Kaul adopted a slow-paced style of play, which was the need of the hour and scored 64 from 81 balls, helping the team post a decent total of 274 for 8 in 50 overs in the match against Delhi. On March 1, 2008, he claimed another half-century for Punjab in the win over Jammu & Kashmir in the same tournament. Four days later, Uday Kaul followed up with another fifty, partnering with Pankaj Dharmani to add 148 to the Punjab total after the team was struggling at 53 for 3 against Himachal Pradesh.
Uday Kaul was signed by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab. He made his Twenty20 debut on May 5, 2008 against Bangalore Royal Challengers, in which the Kings XI Punjab successfully chased down the target of 127, losing just 4 wickets and without needing Uday Kaul to bat. In the match, Uday Kaul was involved in three Bangalore Royal Challengers’ wickets, as he caught Wasim Jaffer and Praveen Kumar behind the stumps and ran out Anil Kumble. He played his last match of the inaugural IPL season on May 21, 2008against Mumbai Indians, which saw a nail-biting finish, in which his team won by 1 run.
