About Turning Winds Academic Institute


Eight years ago, Turning Winds Academic Institute was founded to help families give their troubled teenagers the care and support necessary to rectify negative behavior. Employing an extensively experienced management team and a staff of well-trained teachers and counselors, Turning Winds presents programs designed specifically to address the needs of at-risk youth. Turning Winds is located on an expansive lot of land between mountains along the west bank of the Kootenai River in Montana, blending its premises’ natural surroundings with instructive curriculum to provide students with a well-rounded experience.


Accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, Turning Winds Academic Institute offers students a comprehensive range of academic levels and subjects for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18. Montana certified teachers, in developing the course curriculum at Turning Winds, emphasized the core subjects of math, reading, science, and social studies. Turning Winds students have the opportunity to fulfill second language requirements set by most higher-level educational institutions by taking courses in Russian.


For those preparing for college, Turning Winds has a College-Level Examination Program, through which students can earn credits that are accepted by 2,900 colleges. Students can also take college-level courses through a special distance education program of Brigham Young University. Through BYU’s program, Turning Winds Academic Institute students have the option of studying anthropology, communications, geography, history, mathematics, music, political science, psychology, and sociology.


Turning Winds Academic Institute keeps its curriculum varied and dynamic to ensure students are exposed to a range of learning experiences. Activities at Turning Winds include services projects, field trips, physical training, recreational sports, outdoor education courses, and life skills classes, catering to a breadth of interests.


Accepting only 50 students at a time, Turning Winds guarantees that each attendee receives all the attention they need. Turning Winds accepts enrollees from the United States and abroad. Upon completing a typical 12-month program at Turning Winds Academic Institute, 98 percent of troubled teens are ready to return home and lead more focused, productive lives.
