About Tom Valter
Born in former Czechoslovakia, Tom Valter has a history of working with horses in the United States that goes back further than his arrival in the country in 1970. His first horse ride was at the early age of five, and ever since, he has dedicated his life to sharing the joy of riding and training with others.
Currently located in Somis, California, Tom Valter participates in events that include categories in animal husbandry, riding, and dressage. He has earned numerous medals, awards, and other notable finishes in competitions at the state level, nationally, and the World Championships of 1986 in Toronto. Tom Valter and his students Dorriah Rogers and Keeley Mircetic all competed at the 2009 Dressage Holiday Special at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center ending up with 5 first-place finishes and 3 second-place finishes. Working with his students to not only teach them how to ride and compete but also take care of the horses on their own, Tom Valter passes on his own experience as well as knowledge from his studies at agricultural college.
Tom Valter, along with colleague Nancy McCormick, also assisted in importing the relatively rare Lusitano breed of horse to America. After traveling abroad to Portugal and Brazil as well as learning from Lusitano trainers firsthand, he successfully brought back some of these horses to train and use in competitions. At recent events, Tom Valter has regularly shown one such Lusitano, Ultriz Interagro, and won regularly because of the horse?s endearing character and looks combined with the man's care and training.
