About Thomas Secunda

Born in 1959, Thomas Secunda, fondly known as Tom Secunda, is an American businessman who made his debut in the Forbes World’s Billionaires list in 2008. He is mainly known for co-founding the financial software, news, and media giant Bloomberg Limited Partnership (LP) along with Michael Bloomberg and a few other co-workers from his previous employment. Thomas Secunda currently lives in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, with his wife and two children.

Thomas is an alumnus of State University of New York at Binghamton. He worked as a programmer at Salomon Brothers, a Wall Street investment bank. He then traded bonds at Morgan Stanley for some time. At the age of twenty-four, he earned Ph.D. in mathematics and was invited by Michael Bloomberg to join him in founding a new company. Bloomberg and Secunda had previously worked together at Salomon Brothers.

Thomas Secunda - an important player in Bloomberg‘s success

Together, Michael Bloomberg, Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, and Chuck Zegar set up a company that aimed to access, report, analyze, and provide financial information. It was named ‘Innovative Market Systems’ and later, in 1986, it was renamed Bloomberg LP. The company began as a one-room office in 1981. Thomas Secunda was entrusted with the challenging task of setting up the analytics for the new company. Bloomberg’s first customers included Merrill Lynch, the investment banking and wealth management division of Bank of America. They installed twenty Market Master Terminals and invested $30 million dollars and became a 30% investment owner of the company.

Secunda has been principally responsible for the research and development for a long time now. Due to his untiring efforts, Bloomberg has expanded rapidly and it currently operates Bloomberg Markets, Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio, Bloomberg.com, and Bloomberg Press. He became the Chief Technology Officer of Bloomberg LP. Today, Bloomberg provides real-time and historical financial information to banks, investment institutions, law agencies, and news organizations in over 160 countries. Bloomberg bought back Merrill Lynch’s stake in the company thus solidifying its position. As a result of this, Secunda now owns 4% stake in the company and his net worth is estimated at $1 billion.

Thomas Secunda’s Contribution In Protecting National Parks

Thomas Secunda serves as a board member of the National Parks Conservation Association, an organization committed to protecting and preserving America’s national parks for future generations. He was recently honored at a Green Carpet Gala event in September 2009 for his role in protecting the national parks of America. He also serves as a board member of Intrepid Museum Foundation, an institution promoting history, culture, and education of America. According to Thomas Secunda, money is not everything when it comes to philanthropy; it’s participation that counts.
