Thomas Marko - Professional Summary:  


As Miami-Dade County’s first Development Coordinator, Thomas Marko helps direct county functions to facilitate development and start-up approvals for areas such as planning, zoning, water and sewer infrastructure, public works, and fire safety. Since accepting the newly created position in 2005, Thomas Marko has helped streamline the permitting process and expedited hundreds of private and public projects, including residential and commercial construction and business start-ups. His area of responsibility within the county includes 2,431 square miles of urban and agricultural property with a total population of more than 2.4 million people and Everglades and Biscayne National Parks.

Prior to accepting his current post, Thomas Marko served as Assistant to the Miami-Dade County Manager. As such, he focused on areas such as growth management, water supply and wastewater, environmental issues, roads, and countywide infrastructure. Thomas Marko also served as a Senior Budget Analyst in the Office of Management and Budget. In this role, he assisted in administering the county’s $7 billion annual budget and managed the office’s efforts in relation to tax increment districts. In addition, Thomas Marko worked with The Beacon Council, the county’s partner in economic development, to attract expanding and new businesses to Miami-Dade County.

In previous positions for the county, Thomas Marko directed the Passenger Transportation Regulation Division of the Consumer Services Department and became an Administrative Officer 1, 2, and then 3 in the Public Works Department. In the latter capacity, he assisted in managing areas such as procurement, the budget, and the solid waste program, which serves more than 2 million people. Thomas Marko also handled contract negotiations and prepared resolutions and ordinances.

For several years, Thomas Marko worked in the private sector. He owned a small business in Miami, National Agenda Corporation, that marketed “best practices” of county and city governments across the United States. As Director of Operations for First American Railways, Inc., Thomas Marko helped manage the Florida Fun-Train as well as the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for the holding company. He also joined Esslinger Wooten Maxwell, Inc., Realtors in Coral Gables, Florida, as a realtor.
