Thomas Bixler focused on the heart throughout his 30-year career as a doctor, directing surgery programs in three states. Now a retired thoracic, cardiac, and cardiovascular surgeon in Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. Bixler looks back on a career that ranges from directing cardiothoracic, neonatal and pediatric surgery programs to teaching and private practice.

A 1974 graduate of Emory University School of Medicine, Thomas Bixler proceeded to an internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore from 1974 through 1981, ultimately serving as a Halsted Resident in Cardiac Surgery.

When Dr. Bixler finished his training, he joined the faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, where his academic positions ranged from Assistant Professor to Department Chairman at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Department of Surgery. While in Kansas City, he founded the area’s first heart transplant program, also directing neonatal and pediatric heart surgery programs statewide. In addition, he trained residents in open heart, bypass and valve surgery as well as non-cardiac thoracic surgery.

In 1985 Dr. Bixler returned home to Tallahassee. There he founded the Heart Surgery Center and the Heart Institute at the Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center and the hospital’s heart transplant program. In 2002, he developed and later directed the cardiothoracic program at the South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Georgia, which serves Valdosta and surrounding counties.

Through his career, Thomas Bixler has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations and was a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, and the American College of Chest Physicians.

Since retirement, Dr. Bixler’s free time includes fishing and boating on his vessel, the Heart 2 Heart, and vying with its team in fishing tournaments in the Gulf of Mexico. Thomas Bixler and his wife Jill currently reside in Tallahassee where they raised their four children.
