About Theodore Friedman
Over the course of his life and career, Theodore H. Friedman has compiled a record of accomplishment as a skilled attorney and dedicated humanitarian. A native of New York, he grew up in a union-housing project in The Bronx and went on to graduate from Harvard Law School. Additionally, he successfully argued twice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Friedman also represented luminaries such as Muhammad Ali and actor George C. Scott, as well as the estate of rock icon Jimi Hendrix.
A humanitarian, Theodore H. Friedman took a break from from his studies at the University of Michigan to work on and help found a kibbutz in Israel. Following his return, he doubled his course load, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree with honors in Economics. Later in his career, Friedman dedicated more than a decade to activities fostering peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. He also assisted 25,000 Jewish Ethiopians in immigrating to Israel and lectured on U.S. law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Faculty of Law. As a trial and appellate counsel, Theodore H. Friedman participated in a number of significant cases, including Nallan v. Helmsley-Spear, Inc., which established landlord culpability for third-person attacks on tenants and their guests.
Additionally, the case of Johnson v. MABSTOA held that juries could not deduct potential income taxes when computing personal injury awards. In another well-known case covered in The New York Times, Theodore H. Friedman won an award of more than $50 million for a 16-year-old boy who was injured in a car accident in southern France. Theodore H. Friedman’s other notable cases related to defectively manufactured automobiles, asbestos, ship owners’ negligence, and poorly manufactured carpet padding. With a dedication to the arts, Theodore H. Friedman and his sister commissioned a clarinet concerto by Einojuhani Rautavaara in memory of their mother, Mary Kerewsky Friedman. The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and other venues worldwide have presented the piece, originally conducted by Leonard Slatkin with Richard Stoltzman on lead clarinet.
