For more than 15 years, the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, located in the Chelsea district of New York City, has been a popular destination for contemporary art enthusiasts and collectors looking for an art viewing experience that will excite and inspire. The latest installations by artist Sarah Sze more than satisfy the equation, through their successful use of common objects as vehicles to alter our perceptions. From the monumental “Uncountables (Encyclopedia)” made of metal shelving units, milk cartons, and lights, to smaller works such as a bowl of water whose reflection is projected to create a shadow dance, Sarah Sze repeatedly plays with gravity and physics to challenge our spatial and intellectual assumptions. Sarah Sze is a 2003 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow and has exhibited at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, among other venues. During the next year, Sarah Sze will be unveiling some permanent installations in the U.S. and abroad. The next exhibit at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery will be a dual exhibit, featuring architect and artist Tomas Saraceno and artist Peggy Preheim, known for her meticulously detailed small-scale drawings showing from November 4 to December 18, 2010. Tanya Bonakdar founded the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in 1994 in the SoHo district of Manhattan before relocating to Chelsea in 1998. By undergoing major renovations in 2006, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery was able to add 5,000 square feet of gallery space, which enabled the gallery to exhibit multiple large-scale installations. Founder and owner Tanya Bonakdar, who is on the Board of Directors of the Art Dealers Association of America, maintains an international presence for the gallery by participating regularly in renowned art fairs, such as Art Basel, in Switzerland, and its sister exhibit, Art Basel Miami Beach. Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is located at 521 West 21st Street and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 am to 6 pm.
