About Susan Sachs
A specialist in Middle East affairs and immigration, Susan Sachs has reported on war, regional conflict, immigration, Islam, and politics for The New York Times, Newsday, The Globe and Mail, and the Economist. Susan Sachs is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
From drug smuggling in the Florida Keys and New York City’s kaleidoscope of immigrant communities to the terrorism and trauma stalking Iraq after two wars, Susan Sachs’s insightful reporting and vivid writing have earned her a reputation for keenly observant journalism that opens windows into diverse cultures at home and abroad. Susan Sachs’s investigation of drug trafficking and corruption in the Florida Keys won multiple honors for her and her colleagues on The Miami Herald’s investigative team and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The Overseas Press Club of America awarded Susan Sachs the Bob Considine award for international reporting for a series of in-depth reports exploring the clashing views of history in the schoolbooks of Israel and four of its Arab neighbors. Susan Sachs has reported for nearly two decades from the world’s hot spots in the Middle East, Russia, the Balkans, Turkey, Central Asia and Iran.
Susan Sachs was awarded two mid-career fellowships, the American Political Science Association Congressional Fellowship and the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism. She earned a Bachelors Degree in American Studies and Environmental Education from the University of Michigan.
Now based in France, Susan Sachs writes frequently for The Globe and Mail, The Christian Science Monitor, The Straits Times, The South China Morning Post and a number of magazines. She also is a freelance editor and teaches Masters-level courses in immigration reporting and global reporting at the renowned Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po). She also taught at the prestigious Bosphorus (Bogacizi) University in Istanbul, Turkey, on New Media and Globalization.
