About Susana Segat
Susana Segat earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Stanford University, where she was a Phi Beta Kappa Scholar. Susana Segat again graduated from Stanford University, this time with a Master of Arts degree in Education and the credentials to teach Spanish, Social Studies, French, and Italian at the secondary school level. After graduation, Susana Segat utilized her rich communication skills to manage people, projects, and campaigns for businesses and organizations.
In 1991, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) hired Susana Segat as the National Director of the Office Worker Division in Washington, D.C. Responsible for a range of corporate duties on an international level, Susana Segat worked on the Union President’s Senior Staff and headed one of the national divisions. To establish a presence for the union in Massachusetts, Susana Segat became the Founding Director of the SEIU Massachusetts State Council in 1993. Operating as the organization’s Political Director, Susana Segat oversaw 75,000 members across 5 local unions.
During this time, Susana Segat successfully procured health care and pension protection for union members while facilitating a number of programs through federal, state, and municipal government agencies. With her deep understanding of SEIU, Susana Segat became the President of SEIU Local 888, a Boston-based union representing more than 10,000 workers, in 2003. When Susana Segat took over, she orchestrated the incorporation of seven discrete organizations into a single-minded, statewide union group. In six years as President, Susana Segat helped the organization become profitable while improving member participation.
