About Stephen R. Been

Stephen R. Been became Vice President of Land Development for A Legacy Homes in the late 1960s, when his father handed down his position in the business to his son. A Legacy Homes, based in Atlanta, builds and renovates energy-efficient high-style homes, primarily in the Buckhead and Sandy Springs suburbs. Thanks in part to Stephen R. Been’s work in the company, A Legacy Homes became the largest homebuilder organization in the Atlanta area during the late 1980s, reaching an inventory of between 1,500 and 1,600 houses in and around the city. A Legacy Homes also received OBIE awards for sales and marketing, multiple Georgia Champion Awards, a Bowden Customer Acceptance Award, and was named 2009 National Builder of the Year by Housing Zone’s Professional Builder magazine. A Legacy Homes has also received the Home Buyers Warranty Diamond Platinum Award for flawless customer satisfaction ratings in its warranty department.

After beginning his career in building and contracting by participating in the building business with his father in Jacksonville, Florida, and Brunswick, Georgia, Stephen R. Been attended Ohio State University, graduating with a BA in business in 1963. Prepared to lead a company both by his experience with his father and by his college education, Been went on to become President, Treasurer, and Secretary of the Golden Isles Home Builder’s Association during different years. In the 1980s, Stephen R. Been relocated to Atlanta to pursue opportunities in the city’s large housing market. Been met with more success in Georgia, and was able to retire in 1985 after handing down his position with A Legacy Homes on to his son, Stephen F. Been, a graduate of the University of Georgia who has successfully followed in his father’s footsteps.

In his retirement, Stephen R. Been enjoys volunteering for the Atlanta Youth Foundation and as a Little League coach for Fulton County. He is a sponsor of the Marquis Grissom Youth Foundation, and a fan of bike racing, snowboarding, and ice hockey. Most of all, he is proud to have contributed to his son’s success as a third-generation homebuilder.
