About Stephan Hittmann
Stephan Hittmann - Professional Summary:
Educator and emergency services professional Stephan Hittmann serves as President of the 911 FUND, an international organization based in New York. The 911 FUND is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to utilizing the collective experience and knowledge of New York City firefighters and associated emergency service personnel, especially those who served on and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In response to the support shown to New York in the aftermath of 9/11, and in recognition of the need to enhance emergency services and disaster preparation on a global basis, personnel from FDNY and elsewhere created the 911 FUND to support, train, and better equip first responders both domestically and internationally. Overseeing the 911 FUND, Stephan Hittmann applies his experience as former Executive Director at FDNY, his work in disaster preparedness and the worldwide network created by the 911 FUND to procure surplus or decommissioned fire trucks and ambulances and then donate them to under-equipped fire departments and first responders around the world. Stephan Hittmann also oversees firefighter training for these departments and overall risk management as part of an effort to enhance preparedness, minimize risk, and improve overall safety for both firefighters and civilians alike. An example of the work of the 911 FUND was Stephan Hittmann’s assistance to Johannesburg, South Africa as they prepared for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As the key South African city that was hosting the 2010 World Cup, Johannesburg needed to analyze its emergency service capability to properly manage so huge an event, given the impending influx of literally millions of visitors from around the world. Stephan Hittmann sent a team of firefighters and multi-hazard specialists from the United States and the United Kingdom to Johannesburg to observe, analyze, and recommend how to improve their state of preparedness well in advance of the World Cup, which helped contribute to the safety and success of this historic event.
