Stefan Holtzbrinck Inherits the Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck

The Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck initially began as a book club formed by Stefan’s father, Georg von Holtzbrinck. It slowly grew over the years and acquired several other media companies. It expanded in size as well as in reputation. Soon, on the death of their father, the three siblings - Dieter von Holtzbrinck, Monika Schoeller von Holtzbrinck, and half-brother Stefan Holtzbrinck, had together inherited the Verlagsgruppe Holtzbrinck group, each with one-third share.

In 1971, the company’s management was handed over to Dieter von Holtzbrinck who further diversified the company’s activities. In the mid 1990s, the publishing group acquired publishing company Macmillan which has a rich history of its own. Thus, the Verlagsgruppe Holtzbrinck group became a conglomerate of leading publishing giants.

Meanwhile, Dieter Holtzbrinck's most likely successor, stepbrother Stefan von Holtzbrinck, was getting ready to join the Verlagsgruppe Holtzbrinck group at the Stuttgart headquarters, as CEO of Holtzbrinck subsidiary Macmillan Magazines.

In 2001, Dieter von Holtzbrinck handed over control to Stefan Holtzbrinck, and in 2006, he transferred his shares in the group to his sister Monika Schoeller and half-brother Stefan Holtzbrinck. Hence, both of them became 50% owner of the massive publication empire. Ever since his half-brother stepped down, Stefan Holtzbrinck has headed the board as Chairman of Verlagsgruppe Holtzbrinck.
