Richmond’s Monument Avenue by Standish Alexander

Originally created to pay homage to Confederate heroes of the Civil War, Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, has since expanded to include memorials to notable Americans from the area, including tennis star Arthur Ashe. Confederate General and Virginia native Robert E. Lee has a statue on the boulevard, as do Confederate General “Stonewall” Jackson and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Confederate Captain J.E.B. Stuart and Confederate Naval Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury are also remembered on the avenue.

Monument Avenue began when a wealthy landowner donated property five years after the end of the Civil War. He sought to provide a location that could hold a statue to commemorate the life of Robert E. Lee. Nearly 20 years later, the sculpture was unveiled, along with plans for stately homes to be built in the area. Those houses did not begin to appear until the early 1900s.

The city added subsequent statues in 1907, with Frederick Moynihan’s tribute to J.E.B. Stuart and Edward Valentine’s sculpture of Jefferson Davis. Twelve years later, a memorial to Stonewall Jackson was added, and in 1929, Matthew Fontaine Maury was memorialized on the famous street. Nearly another 70 years passed before another statue was erected on the boulevard; this one honored African-American Arthur Ashe, a famous tennis player from Richmond.

The addition of Ashe’s statue seemed to go smoothly until the groundbreaking. At that point, several Richmond residents expressed displeasure regarding the memorial. Some did not believe that a monument to a sports hero belonged on a street commemorating the Civil War and slavery. Others supported the effort, citing that the statue would represent racial healing and reconciliation. The city council ultimately sided with those in favor of adding the monument.

Several weeks after that, Arthur Ashe’s widow expressed concern, stating that his tribute was to appear near an African-American sports hall of fame planned for Richmond. The statue was ultimately placed on Monument Avenue and today visitors to the city can appreciate it alongside the tributes to other historical figures.
