About Shin-Ping Lao

Shin-Ping Lao - Professional Summary:

Shin-Ping Lao graduated with a major in zoology and a double minor in Spanish and botany from the University of Florida. Her insight and determination earned her recognition throughout her educational career, and she garnered a place on the Dean’s List or the President’s Honor Roll for a combined total of 4 years. Because of her academic distinction, Shin-Ping Lao was able to finance her entire career at the university, including tuition, room, and board, with merit-based scholarships. She received her Bachelor of Science cum laude and left the University of Florida with a grade point average of 3.83 in May 2010. Experienced in a broad array of outdoor adventure sports, Shin-Ping Lao enjoys backpacking, canoeing, and swimming, among other pursuits. Interested in sharing her expertise and her love for the outdoors with classmates, she organized outdoor adventure trips for students at the University of Florida. These trips included snorkeling, camping, mountain biking, kayaking, and other activities. Working through the J. Wayne Reitz Union, Shin-Ping Lao planned all aspects of each journey, including itinerary, transportation, financial expenditure, safety procedures, and meal menus. In addition to her organizational and logistical duties, she directly led her peers on these adventure trips. Long interested in methods of sustainable living and dedicated to environmental awareness, Shin-Ping Lao integrated an educational program into the adventure trips she designed and led. This program included practical lessons in Leave No Trace techniques, which minimize the impact of humans on the natural beauty they travel through. Shin-Ping Lao also instilled a sense of the ethical system of Earth stewardship that lies behind Leave No Trace methods and taught participants safe practices for each new activity. In the months before she left the outdoor adventure program, she mentored an incoming trip leader to ensure that continued trips would educate and inspire future students. Shin-Ping Lao has refined her outdoor skills through a variety of specialized educational opportunities. For instance, Shin-Ping Lao completed a Survival Field Course at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School in Utah. This extensive course included segments on group leadership, plant identification, low-impact camping, and navigation.
