The possessor of two academic degrees, Gregory Munks began his career in law enforcement in 1975. Starting out as a Reserve Police Officer for the Palo Alto Police Department, Greg Munks demonstrated a considerable talent for law enforcement that led to his promotion to Deputy Sheriff after two years. As Deputy Sheriff, Greg Munks held assignments in the main jail, honor camp, and manpower pool. Four years after taking on the role of Deputy Sheriff, Greg Munks was promoted to Lieutenant of the Palo Alto Police Department, where he gained experience as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Burglary Suppression Detective, Robbery and Homicide Investigator, and Manager of the Personnel and Training Division. Gregory Munks also gained administrative experience in his role as Human Resources Manager for the City of Palo Alto. In 1993, Gregory Munks was promoted to Undersheriff of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. In this role, Greg Munks was responsible for serving as Sheriff in the event of the Sheriff's absence, as well as assisting the Sheriff in all his duties, including the planning, organizing, directing, and reviewing of active law enforcement and administrative activities. Additionally, Greg Munks deftly managed a $100 million annual budget. Respected community-wide as an upstanding citizen and law enforcement expert, Gregory Munks was elected Sheriff of San Mateo County in June 2006. Gregory Munks assumed the duties of Sheriff in January 2007. Currently, Gregory Munks is a member of the California State Sheriffs' Association, California Peace Officers' Association, Western States Sheriffs' Association, California Narcotic Officers' Association, and International Association of Chiefs of Police. Outside of work, Gregory Munks enjoys a broad range of activities. Among his favorite hobbies are playing golf, horseback riding, traveling, and spending time with his family. Greg Munks also enjoys giving back to the community through his memberships with the San Mateo County Service League, Youth and Family Enrichment Services, and the San Mateo County History Museum.
