Over his more than 30-year career in law enforcement, San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks has developed the skills necessary to manage any kind of conflict. Highly trained in narcotics investigation, domestic violence prevention, and terrorism readiness, among several other specialties, Sheriff Munks has already implemented a number of successful programs since his election in June 2006. One such program, the CARON (Community Alliance to Rebuild Our Neighborhood) project, has proven particularly successful. Designed to combat gang violence in the North Fair Oaks area of San Mateo County, Sheriff Greg Munks helped develop the collaborative project while serving as Undersheriff. In addition to his continued leadership of the CARON project, Sheriff Greg Munks serves on the Governing Board of the San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force as the Chair of the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force and as Chair of the Northern California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Program (HIDTA). Sheriff Munks' leadership of the latter organization has helped measurably reduce the flow of drugs into San Mateo County and other Northern California counties. Sheriff Greg Munks is also a board member of the Domestic Violence Council of San Mateo County and a former Chair of the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center. Sheriff Greg Munks began his law enforcement career as a deputy in the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. From there, Sheriff Munks joined the Palo Alto Police Department, where he held a number of positions, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant. In his final position with the Palo Alto Police Department before rejoining the San Mateo County Sheriff's office, Sheriff Greg Munks led the department's human resources responsibilities. In this role, Sheriff Munks developed the City of Palo Alto Management Academy, the Palo Alto Police Bicycle Program, and the department's Domestic Violence Response Policy, among other important initiatives. Sheriff Greg Munks currently resides in San Mateo County with his wife and four children.
