About Sheriff Greg Munks

Elected to the office of Sheriff of San Mateo County in June 2006, Gregory Munks leverages over 30 years of professional law enforcement experience toward his role. As Sheriff, Gregory Munks is responsible for the oversight of a 600-person law enforcement agency. Gregory Munks is an expert in managing all activities controlled by the Sheriff's office, including patrols, investigations, search and rescue, bomb detection and disposal, narcotic enforcement, and corrections. Greg Munks is also well versed in administrative duties, such as internal affairs, personnel and training, and the management of a $100 million operating budget. Prior to his election to the office of Sheriff, Gregory Munks spent 14 years preparing for the role as Undersheriff. As second-in-command, Greg Munks assisted the Sheriff in his duties and stepped into the role of Sheriff during the Sheriff's absence. Greg Munks has additionally spent time as a Human Resources Manager for the City of Palo Alto and as a Lieutenant for the Palo Alto Police Department. Over the course of his career, Greg Munks has received specialized training for homicide investigation, narcotics enforcement, robber investigation, sexual assault investigation, urban terrorism, executive hazardous materials management, and jail operations. While serving the community of San Mateo County, Gregory Munks spearheaded numerous initiatives designed to make the community a safer place to live. Greg Munks developed and implemented the Palo Alto Police Bicycle Patrol Program, as well as authored a Seat Belt Safety Program Grant. Additionally, Greg Munks has made strides to end domestic violence through his development of the Palo Alto Police Department's Domestic Violence Response Policy. Furthermore, Greg Munks was instrumental in leading department efforts in the San Mateo County Radio Replacement Project, a 9-year, $20 million project to replace the radio system for the Sheriff's Office. Professionally affiliated with the California State Sheriffs' Association, California Peace Officers' Association, Western States Sheriffs' Association, California Narcotic Officers' Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Gregory Munks currently resides in California's Bay Area.
