About Shereef Akeel
Mr. Shereef Akeel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan, a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University, and a Juris Doctor Cum Laude from Michigan State University's Detroit College of Law. At present, Shereef Akeel serves as an attorney at Akeel & Valentine PLC, specializing in civil rights, business litigation, discrimination, and personal injury law. Michigan Lawyers Weekly elected Shereef Akeel Lawyer of the Year in 2004 and Super Lawyers Magazine has recognized Shereef Akeel as being in the top five percent of Michigan Lawyers in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Shereef Akeel has received national attention for his work with Iraqi prisoners tortured in the Abu Ghraib prison and in other institutions. Recently, Shereef Akeel filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of detainees whose civil rights had been disregarded by American contractors and corporations hired by the American government. Shereef is admitted to the United Supreme Court. Shereef Akeel has also spearheaded a number of other high-profile discrimination cases involving public accommodation, excessive force, and employment discrimination.
A Certified Public Accountant, Shereef Akeel’s work originally centered on business and finance law, but his focus changed after discrimination against Arab Americans peaked following the September 11th tragedy. Working in both state and federal courts, Shereef Akeel has garnered substantial experience with civil rights and personal injury claims, devoting the majority of his time to the litigation of such cases. Shereef Akeel supplements his important legal work by serving as a board member of the Oakland County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU honored Shereef Akeel for his important work with its Defender of Freedom Award in 2005. Before Akeel & Valentine PLC, Shereef Akeel served with Melamed, Dailey, and Akeel.
