About Shelly Culea
Shelly Culea - Professional Summary: During her 39-year career as a jewelry designer and silversmith, Shelly Culea has pursued a wide range of artistic, academic, and charitable efforts. In her years growing up just outside of Kansas City, Kansas, Shelly Culea gravitated toward 3-D model making and paper-mache, with which she created clay animal figures, heads, and masks. Upon high school graduation, she entered The University of Kansas, majoring in Jewelry and Silversmithing. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the institution in Lawrence, Shelly Culea commenced a career in silversmithing, jewelry design, and goldsmithing.
In 1972, Shelly Culea moved to Minneapolis, when the city was considered a flourishing center of jewelry manufacturing. She acted as a Bench Jeweler at Kirchner Corporation, where she sized engagement and wedding rings and quickly became adept at enlarging or reducing the rings’ sizes in 10 to 15 minutes on average. In 1973, she founded Shelly Culea Jewelry & Silversmithing, a company whose team designs jewelry and hollowware for an array of customers, including individuals and other resellers.
After just one year running her own business, Shelly Culea accepted a freelance position designing jewelry for Jewelmont Corporation, a post she fulfilled while operating her own firm. One of the leading American jewelry manufacturers and distributors during that period, Jewelmont enabled Shelly Culea to design rings, pendants, and similar pieces for sale in catalogs and department stores nationwide from 1974 to 1978. In addition, she designed a line of sterling silver rings with stones and 14-karat yellow gold and diamond pendants for the company. One of the pendants was featured in Dayton’s 1977 Christmas catalog.
As an individual who believes in dedicating her time to improving the community where she lives and works, Shelly Culea teaches adults with disabilities how to make crafts through two organizations, Wisconsin’s Pathways to Independence initiative in Union Grove and Careers Industries in Burlington. She presently lives in Mequon, Wisconsin, with her family and stays physically active by working out during her leisure time.
