Seshu Desu - Professional Summary:

As an engineer and university administrator, Seshu Desu has written more than 170 journal articles, 70 conference papers, and achieved more than 4,000 citations during his notable career. He also has edited a half-dozen texts on thin films. Desu has held prominent positions at a number of scholarly journals, including Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Electroceramics, Editorial Advisory Board Member of the Journal of Intelligent Materials and Structures, and Principal Editor of the Journal of Materials Research. Seshu Desu also has served on the board of directors of companies such as CERAM, Thin Film Electronics ASA, and Telitcom. Additionally, he has functioned as a committee member of the American Ceramic Society’s Electronics Division and Basic Science Division, the International Symposium on Integrated Ferroelectrics, and the Materials Research Society. He also has organized multiple symposiums on thin films and electronic ceramics.

Seshu Desu formerly headed the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University as Dean. Before that, Desu led departments at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and he also worked for General Electric and Bell Laboratories.

Active in leadership roles, Seshu Desu has served on numerous committees at public universities. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Desu chaired the Academic Priorities Council and Evaluation Committee and founded the Information Technology Task Force. He also helped improve the school as a member of the Provost’s Steering Committee on Reorganization and the Provost’s Advisory Group on Research. At Virginia Tech, Seshu Desu chaired the Committee on Integration of Technical Writing throughout the Undergraduate Curriculum and the Graduate Student Recruiting and Admission Committee for the department. He has earned multiple teaching awards, as well.

In addition to his contributions to universities and students, Seshu Desu has conducted important research that has benefited the engineering field. Between 1989 and 2010, Seshu Desu managed multiple research contracts with total funding of more than $16 million. He has received 29 U.S. patents and has several more pending.
