About Sean Tunis
Dr. Sean Tunis, Director of the Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP) in Baltimore, has been a leading figure in United States health care policy for the better part of the last decade. As the former Director of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality and the Chief Medical Officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Dr. Sean Tunis directly contributed to policy development and management for the U.S. Medicare and Medicaid Programs, which provide health care to more than 100 million Americans.
In his current work with the CMTP, Dr. Sean Tunis leverages his years of experience in policy creation toward improving the quality and reliability of research methods for the development of new medical technologies. Dr. Sean Tunis primarily focuses his efforts on issues of Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) and evidence-based medicine. Established in 2006, CMTP has already achieved recognition in the medical community with Dr. Sean Tunis frequently appearing as a guest speaker on panels related to the implementation of innovative clinical research and technology policies.
Extensively educated, Dr. Sean Tunis received his M.D. from the Stanford University School of Medicine. Upon earning his M.D., Dr. Sean Tunis completed his medical residency through UCLA and the University of Maryland. Dr. Tunis also attended Stanford for his M.S. degree in the field of Health Services Research. Dr. Sean Tunis' undergraduate education came from the Cornell University School of Agriculture, where he studied Biology and History of Science.
In addition to his leading role with the CMTP, Dr. Sean Tunis currently serves as a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Sean Tunis is specifically affiliated with the AAAS Science & Technology Policy group, which is committed to helping scientists and engineers become directly involved in policy creation.
