About Sean Keem

Sean Keem - Professional Summary:

At Keem Spine Institute, P.C., based in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Sean Keem provides relief from pain and increased levels of activity to patients suffering from a wide range of back problems. Dr. Keem, the center’s founder, studies and teaches the latest surgical techniques in an effort to improve care for his patients. He believes that careful evaluation, patient education, and the inclusion of patients in the decision-making process lead to better surgical outcomes. Dr. Keem’s patients have complimented him on his dedication, kindness, and attention to detail.

Dr. Sean Keem advocates minimally invasive surgical techniques for a number of spinal problems. He completed the first kyphoplasty surgery in Georgia history and performs more kyphoplasties than any other surgeon in the state. Dr. Keem uses kyphoplasty to treat spinal compression fractures by inserting a hollow tube containing a deflated balloon into a small incision in the patient’s back. Once the tube penetrates the crushed vertebra, the balloon inflates and restores the bone to its proper height. Dr. Sean Keem then injects bone cement into the vertebra to hold it in place and increase its strength.

For patients in need of a spinal fusion, Dr. Sean Keem offers a vast array of minimally invasive surgical procedures. In Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion, or XLIF, surgery, the patient lies on his or her side. Dr. Keem reaches the patient’s spine through a very small incision in his or her side and can then remove discs and implant spacers and bone grafts to fuse the injured vertebrae. XLIF works best for patients who have pathologies involving thoracic and lumbar vertebrae down to L5. Patients who had previous retroperitoneal surgeries involving the kidney and/or aorta may not be candidates for the procedure.

For patients who need lumbar-sacral (the very low back) spinal stabilization for degenerative conditions or adjunction to deformity spinal surgeries such as scoliosis, Dr. Keem employs the AxiaLIF technique. AxiaLIF approaches the spinal column through an incision near the coccyx (tail bone), avoiding damage to important muscles and ligaments and allowing patients a minimally invasive experience. Both surgeries offer fewer neurologic complications, superior cosmesis, shorter surgery times and hospital stays, and quicker recoveries than traditional spinal fusion methods.
