Ryan Taylor kick-started his football career in 2002 by joining the English football club, Tranmere Rovers, based in Wirral. During his tenure with the club, which lasted till 2005, he played in 98 matches contributing fourteen goals.

At the end of his contract several clubs such as Everton and Norwich City tried to rope him in. But Ryan Taylor decided to move onto Wigan Athletic and signed a four-year deal with the club on July 13, 2005 for an undisclosed fee. Ryan Taylor met with a series of injuries in the 2006 season that held him back from playing for the club.
