Ryan Millbern - Professional Summary:     With experience in Colorado law enforcement with the Vail and Basalt Police Departments, Ryan Millbern currently serves as an Explosives Ordnance Detection K9 Handler in the Middle East. In his capacity, Ryan Millbern searches open areas, vehicles, and buildings for explosives, ensuring the safety of United States Government personnel and local civilians. 

A former Eagle Scout, Ryan Millbern majored in speech communications at California State University, Fullerton, graduating in 2002. He next pursued training at the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy in Glenwood Springs, graduating with a cumulative academic record of more than 93 percent. He joined the Vail Police Department in late 2002, fulfilling diverse law enforcement responsibilities over the next eight years as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant, and K9 Officer. Due to Millbern?s exceptional performance in the Patrol Division, he was promoted to the position of Detective after less than two years on the job. While serving as a Sergeant, he supervised a team of six officers. Throughout his career in Vail and regardless of rank, Ryan Millbern consistently ranked as a top-performing officer. He received extensive training in dog handling at training facilities in North Carolina, Florida, and Texas. As a K9 Officer, Millbern seized more than $10,000 in cash and secured more than 35 K9-specific arrests even while handling non-K9 related calls. In January 2011, he joined the Basalt Police Department, performing basic patrol duties prior to his current position. 

Ryan Millbern has earned a number of awards over his career, including the Bronze Medal of Meritorious Service in 2009 for successfully reducing Vail bear-citizen encounters. Also in 2009, he received the Vail Police Department?s second-highest decoration, the Silver Medal of Valor, after an off-duty incident in which he thwarted an armed attack of a father and his 4-year-old son in a public park. The following year, he earned his second Silver Medal of Valor for bravery in response to a shooting homicide. In September 2010, Ryan Millbern received the Outstanding Individual Dedication to DUI Enforcement Award from the Colorado chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. 

Notable cases Ryan Millbern has played a major role in include the ?Dumb and Dumber? bank robbery and the Richard ?Rossi? Moreau homicide case. As Lead Detective in the Dumb and Dumber case, Millbern positively identified the 2 Australian perpetrators within 10 minutes of their ill-conceived bank robbery. The pair was subsequently apprehended at Denver International Airport attempting to leave the country. In his free time, Millbern enjoys softball and all outdoor activities.
