Roman Bednar is an international football striker, who was born on March 26, 1983 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Between 2004 and 2005, he has played 8 games for the Czech Republic Under-21 (U-21) side, scoring four goals. On August 16, 2006, he played his first match for the senior national team against Serbia.


Roman Bednar began his career as a youth player at CAFC Prague, and in 1998, he joined Bohemians Prague, a Czech football club. In 2002, he moved to another Czech football club Mlada Boleslav, and in the 2003-04 season, he finished as Mlada Boleslav’s top goalscorer with 10 goals, helping the club to win the Division Two title. In the following season, Roman Bednar scored six goals, helping his team to retain its place in the Gambrinus Liga, and he was voted as the ‘Discovery of the season’.


In July 2005, Roman Bednar was transferred to the Lithuanian football club, FBK Kaunas, and immediately was loaned out on a one-year deal to Heart of Midlothian. He scored on his debut for Hearts against Kilmarnock and also in the 3-0 win over Dundee United. In a match against Rangers, he scored the only goal in his club’s 1-0 victory. Roman Bednar played a part in Hearts second place finish in the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Cup victory. At the start of the 2006-07 season, he scored a brace in the 2-1 victory against Celtic, and on August 31, 2006 he joined Hearts on a permanent deal. On the same date the following year, Roman Bednar was loaned out on a season-long deal to West Bromwich Albion. He scored his first goal and brace for West Bromwich Albion, when he played for the club’s reserve side against the Lincoln City’s reserve team in the 4-1 win. On October 24, 2007, he scored a hat-trick in the 6-1 win over Oldham Athletic reserves.


Roman Bednar made his first-team debut for the club in the 3-0 win over Watford on November 3, 2007, when he came on as a substitute. In January 2008, he scored the winning goal in the penalty shootout against Charlton Athletic, and he won the Midland Player of the Month award. West Bromwich Albion signed Roman Bednar on a permanent deal for £2.3 million at the end of his loan period.
