Rohit Sharma is an Indian cricketer born on April 30, 1987 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He is a right-handed middle-order batsman who sometimes bowls right-arm off spin. He obtained his primary education from Our Lady of Vailankanni High School, Mumbai, and because of his talent, he was offered a scholarship at the Swami Vivekanand International School, where he pursued his studies. His impressive performances at the Giles and Harris Shield school cricket tournaments paved way for his selection for the Mumbai Under-17 team. Before long Rohit Sharma was included in the Indian Under-17 and Under-19 Indian teams.
Rohit Sharma shot to prominence at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup held in Sri Lanka, where he finished as one of the top run-getters, fetching him a call-up to the national side.
In July 2006, Rohit Sharma made his First-class debut for India A in a match against New Zealand A in Darwin. He played his first One Day International (ODI) match against Ireland on June 23, 2007 in Belfast when he was 20 years. On November 18, 2007 Rohit Sharma scored his first ODI half-century in a match against Pakistan in Jaipur and his impressive performances won him a place in India's 16-man squad for the 2007-08 Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia, where he made a total of 235 runs, including his 66 in the first final in Sydney.
Rohit Sharma played his first International Twenty20 (IT20) match came on September 19, 2007 at the International Cricket Council (ICC) match against England. The following day, he caught the attention of the cricketing world by scoring a match-winning 50* off 40 deliveries against South Africa. Rohit Sharma set up a 85-run partnership with the Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, which not only took India through to the semifinals but also won him the Man of the Match award. He carried his good form to the finals against Pakistan, where he scored a brisk 30 runs off 16 balls. As of 2008, Rohit Sharma has played 27 International Twenty20 matches.
He made his first appearance for Mumbai at the Ranji Trophy during the course of the 2006-07 season, and in a match against Gujarat, he scored 205 runs off 267 balls. In the finals against Bengal, Rohit Sharma he scored a fifty and helped Mumbai win the tournament. He made his Twenty20 debut for Mumbai against Baroda on April 3, 2007.
Rohit Sharma was signed by the Deccan Chargers team for an amount of US$ 750,000, and featured in 13 matches during the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL). He made 404 runs, his highest being 76*, finishing the season as one the leading run scorers at an average of 36.72 and also held the coveted Orange Cap for a short time.
