About Robert McMullen
Robert McMullen - Professional Summary:
While attending the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he earned honors in psychiatry, Dr. Robert McMullen became acquainted with two icons in the field of psychiatry. Harold Searles, MD, a pioneer of psychiatric medicine, specialized in psychoanalytic treatments of schizophrenia.
After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Robert McMullen began a rotating internship at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. Subsequently, he completed a psychiatry residency at New York State Psychiatric Institute and the Columbia University School of Medicine. In his residency, Dr. Robert McMullen took extra supervision in group therapy and family therapy in addition to the required training in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology.
Now in private practice in Manhattan, Dr. Robert McMullen specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, particularly bipolar disorder. He also treats a number of patients with anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and schizophrenia. In the medication treatment of psychiatric disorders, Dr. Robert McMullen prescribes proven nutrients and vitamins, such as N-acetylcysteine, L-methylfolate, fish oil, and vitamin D. In addition, he may prescribe behavioral and lifestyle modifications.
Dr. Robert McMullen, listed in Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd.’s Top Doctors: New York Metro Area for 10 straight years, authored “Pharmacologic Management of Psychiatric Disorder,” a chapter in The Textbook of Temporomandibular Disorder, published in 1991. A psychiatrist who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Sometimes I recommend psychotherapy and sometimes medication---and often both. For psychotherapy, I refer patients to other professionals. I myself stopped doing psychotherapy in 1988---after 8 years in practice--in order to specialize in just the medication treatment of psychiatric disorders. I also use: #1: treatment with nutrients and vitamins that have been PROVEN (in double blind studies, for the most part) to help. These include using L-methylfolate, N-acetylcysteine, fish oil, and vitamin D. #2: behavioral and lifestyle modification. This includes developing a very regular life style, such sleep regulation [sometimes using melatonin to help this]. It also includes exericse. One hour of exercise per day for 5 days per week works as well for depression as taking an antidepressant. I am widely considered one of the best psychopharmacologists in NYC.
I particularly specialize in the treatment of bipolar disorder. The biggest problems in that disorder are usually rapid cycling and treatment resistant depression. I also treat a significant amount of patients with anxiety disorders, OCD, and schizphrenia.
