Robert Cheung, a businessman from Hong Kong, China, began playing poker at the River Rock Casino, in Richmond, BC, as a hobby, but soon started taking part in tournaments. In this event, he finished first and went home with $46,655. Robert Cheung ranked fourth in the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Poker Tournament – World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit Event held on June 19, the same year and won a larger sum of $82,720. He played in Event 41 - No-Limit Hold'em at the 37th Annual World Series of Poker held on August 5, ranked 23rd, and bagged $8,935. The next significant booty for Robert Cheung was $9,965, which he claimed in the No-Limit Hold'em event at the Festa al Lago/World Poker Tour (WPT) that took place on October 7. At the 38th Annual World Series of Poker, Robert Cheung earned another $16,582 by finishing 22nd in the WSOP Heads Up No-Limit Hold'em World Championship. On June 23, Robert Cheung gave a remarkable performance in the No-Limit Hold'em event of the 38th Annual World Series of Poker when he finished first to claim a whopping sum of $673,628.
Robert Cheung had yet another first-place finish on March 8, 2008 in the No-Limit Hold'em event of the Wynn Classic in which he won $94,573 in prize money. The $13,500 won at the Bay 101 Shooting Star/WPT Event Season 6 in the No-Limit Hold'em Championship event held on March 14, the same year, forms a part of his winnings at poker. In the No-Limit Hold'em (Event 32) event of the World Poker Challenge/WPT Event Season 6 held on March 22, 2008, Robert Cheung potted $11,294 by finishing in seventh place. At the 39th World Series of Poker 2008, in Event 5 - WSOP No-Limit Hold'em held on June 3, 2008, Robert Cheung finished 20th and he went home richer by another $16,496. On June 17, 2008, Robert Cheung had another notable victory at the Mega Stack Series in the Pot-Limit Omaha event (Event 20) when he ranked first for the fourth time in live tournaments and added $14,278 to his bankroll. Robert Cheung was one among the participants of the Pot-Limit Hold’em (Event 38) at the 39th WSOP 2008 held on June 20, 2008. In the event, he ended up in sixth place and walked away with another $20,100.
