About Riviera Beach

Located in Palm Beach County on Florida's Atlantic Shore, Riviera Beach is the ideal oceanside destination for vacations and year-round living, offering a comfortable average yearly temperature of 75 degrees. The city offers numerous beach activities, such as ocean swimming, scuba diving, beach volleyball, and fishing. The community also has a well-maintained beachfront park and a beach boardwalk with popular shops, restaurants, and cafes. Luxury hotel accommodations are available at several resort hotels, including the respected Hilton and Marriott franchises. Through steadfast efforts toward community revitalization, Riviera Beach has earned a positive reputation as an attractive and diverse waterfront city.

Riviera Beach has a rich history that begins in the 1880s with the construction of a hotel called The Oak Lawn House. Settled in 1881, the community used to be a tropical wilderness and was the home for early Native Americans who established themselves on the west bank of Lake Worth. The town, originally settled as Oak Lawn, was also home to Hope Sound, the first school for African Americans. Officially incorporated as Riviera Beach in 1922, the town soon thereafter suffered severe hurricane damage and did not experience significant growth until mid-century, when it became notable as an African-American community. In recent decades, Riviera Beach has made major improvements to its beach and marina areas, recognized in 2011 by the Florida Redevelopment Association for outstanding improvements to the Ocean Mall and Beach Park.

The Port of Palm Beach, which is located in Riviera Beach, currently operates as the 18th-busiest container port in the United States. Used by Bahamas Celebration cruise ships as its base of operations, The Port of Palm Beach exports a significant amount of cargo to the Caribbean, including diesel fuel, molasses, and liquid asphalt.
