Richard Hughes is a footballer who was born on June 25, 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland. He is a versatile player, and can play as a defensive midfielder or as a left winger. Richard Hughes was a part of the Scotland national football team during the 2004-05 season and won his first international cap in May 2004 in a match against Estonia. As of 2008, he has represented his country for five times.
Richard Hughes began his career in football by joining the youth ranks at Atlanta Bergamasca Calcio (B.C) following which, he moved to Arsenal as a youth player. In 1998 he joined Athletic Football Club (AFC) Bournemouth and made his debut for the club in a 2-0 win against Lincoln City football club (F.C). In his stint with the club, he has made 132 appearances and scored 14 goals. His impressive performances with AFC Bournemouth earned him a contract with Portsmouth F.C and he debuted for the club in a 1-1 draw against Sheffield United F.C.
Richard Hughes was loaned out to Grimsby Town F.C in 2003, for which he made 12 appearances and scored in his final match against Brighton & Hove Albion. He returned to Portsmouth and was given a Premiership chance in December 2003. He netted his first Pompey goal, which was the winning goal in a 1-0 match against the Liverpool F.C at the Football Association (FA) Cup and took Portsmouth through to the quarter-final match against Arsenal. On July 28, 2006, Richard Hughes along with Lomana LuaLua, a fellow Portsmouth player, extended their contract with the club for another 3 years at Fratton Park.
Richard Hughes contributes to the Portsmouth News by writing a weekly column titled 'Look Hughes Talking'. Also, he is the presenter of ‘Richard Hughes' Scouting Report’ on local radio station 107.4 The Quay on the Friday Night Pompey Preview programme and is a great supporter of Celtic and AC Milan. Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, feels Richard Hughes as one of the brightest prospects for Portsmouth and as of May 2008, he has played 90 games for the club.
