Rauf Ashraf was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on August 15, 1958. Rauf Ashraf was raised with his three sisters and two brothers largely in Queensland, where Rauf Ashraf’s family moved when Rauf Ashraf was 5.

Rauf Ashraf showed a very acute, advanced understanding and skill of cricket as a child. Rauf Ashraf remembers gathering his friends together, asking them to bowl him the ball at varying speeds and angles. This unusual training method proved essential to Rauf Ashraf’s success later in life, particularly in hand-to-eye coordination. Rauf Ashraf hit his first century at age 14 as a freshman in high school.
