Dr. Rafael Schulze began his career in the armed services at the United States Military Academy, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science. After receiving his degree, he served in several Corps of Engineer positions, including Platoon Leader in the 536th Construction Engineer Battalion in Panama and Operations Officer for the 18th Airborne Corps Headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1997, Dr. Schulze entered the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine as part of the Army Health Professions Scholarship Program.
After completing his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Dr. Rafael Schulze finished residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He then joined Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in 2006, and from there he deployed for several months as the Theater Dermatologist for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He returned from his deployment in 2008 and completed the Advanced Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship at the California Skin Institute, one year of additional comprehensive formal surgical training recognized by the American College of Mohs Surgery.
During this fellowship, Dr. Rafael Schulze gained considerable hands-on training in skin cancer surgery, laser surgery, and advanced cosmetic techniques. He also learned to extend the unique advantages of local anesthesia to his patients. Since then, he has routinely performed cartilage grafts, two-staged pedicle flaps, face lifts, laser rejuvenation treatments, and liposuction, all under local anesthesia, providing equivalent outcomes to traditional techniques performed with general anesthesia but with lower risk. He continues to extend these and other options to his patients at San Antonio Military Medical Center.
