Phil Brown’s career as an economist has spanned fieldwork, academic research, college-level instruction, and journal editing. Phil Brown is published in the Journal of Development Economics, the Journal of Environmental Management, Economic Development and Cultural Change, and dozens of other professional journals. His work has been featured on National Public Radio and in the New York Times best-selling book, Superfreakonomics.
An expert on China, he has undertaken numerous micro-economic studies of China’s rural economy. He is well know for his work on the social and economic implications of dam construction, on the design and operation of China’s New Cooperative Medical System, on village elections, and on social competition in rural Chinese villages.
Prior to his Ph.D. studies, Phil Brown worked with leading NGOs in Africa, including the International Rescue Committee and HelpAge Zimbabwe.
