Phil Brown, born on May 30, 1959, in South Shields, is a former English defender and as of 2008, he is the manager of the Hull City Football Club.
Phil Brown started his career in football with Red Duster, playing Sunday league football in the South Shields Business Houses League, and Bobby Davison, the head coach of Ferencváros, was his teammate. Phil Brown was signed by Hartlepool United and represented the club from 1978 to 1985. During his tenure at the club, he made 217 appearances and has 8 goals to his credit. In 1978, he moved to Halifax Town and scored 19 goals in 135 matches with the club. In 1988, Phil Brown signed a contract with Bolton Wanderers, and represented the club till 1994. During his tenure at the club, he played in 256 games and has 14 goals to his credit. He was sold to Blackpool in 1994 and represented the club in 44 games, scoring 5 goals. He retired from playing football in 1996 after spending the two seasons at Blackpool.
Phil Brown returned to his former club Bolton in 1999 as an assistant manager to Colin Todd, the manager of the club. He served as the caretaker-manager in the absence of the senior manager and spent 6 years with the club. In June 2005, he succeeded George Burley as the manager of Derby County and stayed for just 7 months. Phil Brown joined Hull City on October 27, 2006 as the first-team coach under Phil Parkinson. Under his coaching, his team made 3 wins and 6 draws and for his impressive performance, he secured an appointment as the permanent manager of the club on January 4, 2007. Phil Brown was instrumental in bringing back Dean Windass, the veteran striker, on loan to the club ensured the 1-0 win against Bristol City at Wembley in the Championship play-off final on May 24, 2008. This win helped the club to get promoted to the top level of the Premier League for the first time in its history. Under the management of Phil Brown, Hull City made the third fastest ascent ever, from the bottom of the English football league to the top division. On August 16, 2008, when Hull City recorded their maiden win over Fulham in the Premier League, Phil Brown signed a new three-year contract with the club.
