About Penrith Farms

Penrith Farms is a coeducational, experiential learning program for young adults, 18 years and older, who need guidance in making life choices. For more than 25 years, the directors of Penrith Farms, Jim and Sherry Brewster, have worked with adolescents and young adults in a residential setting. The Brewsters founded The China House in Marin County, California, as a voluntary crisis intervention center for those with behavioral and substance abuse problems, and they ran the project for several years. In 1983, they opened Penrith Farms and began working with the state of Washington, offering foster care services for adolescents. By 2003, the program had transitioned into a young adult program serving the private sector in the U.S. and Canada.

At Penrith Farms, the primary focus is on education. There are several options available, both traditional and alternative, to ensure that all students receive a high school diploma, earn college credits, or focus on vocational study. Students are taught the value of doing and completing work successfully. They are introduced to concepts they will find in the workplace, such as working under time constraints and interacting with superiors, peers, and subordinates.

The diverse Life Skills program offered at Penrith Farms creates an environment that allows for personal growth and encourages students to change behaviors and thinking processes. The courses teach practical social skills such as job interviewing, basic finances, and home keeping. Students also gain skills in the computer lab and can explore interests in programming, graphic arts, and web design. Specialty subjects such as culinary arts, horsemanship, woodworking and construction, music, and organic gardening challenge each student physically and mentally, and give them a better understanding of themselves and the world.

By concentrating on its core values of compassion, diligence, honesty, and humility, the goal of Penrith Farms is to instill confidence in all its students, thereby giving them the skills they need to succeed in a competitive society.
