Paul Roesser and The St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center

A longtime resident of Rancho Santa Fe, California, Paul Roesser currently serves as a parishioner of Nativity Catholic Church. Deeply involved in the spiritual community, Paul Roesser utilizes his leadership position to support Arizona State University’s (ASU) St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center. Paul Roesser derives a great deal of satisfaction in the knowledge that he plays an instrumental role in enriching the lives of ASU’s current student body by supporting the Newman Center’s cause.

Timothy Harrington, John Gilbride, James and Joseph Walsh, and Father P.J. Garvey established the first Newman Center in 1893 at the University of Pennsylvania (UP). As the pastor of the local St. James Catholic Church, Father Garvey collaborated with the young men to bring together Catholic students and educators at UP, laying the foundation for the creation of numerous other Newman Centers around the world. Named after the revered Cardinal John Henry Newman, the Newman Centers strive to instill and bolster religious values in secular academic institutions, providing students with living quarters and ministry services, as well. Although many of the students affiliated with on-campus Newman Centers are of the Roman Catholic faith, the organization opens its doors to young Christians of any denomination. In addition to the regular prayer meetings that take place at ASU’s St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center, students and their friends and family often celebrate weddings, baptisms, and mass there. Additionally, the Newman Center occasionally functions as the site of funerals, providing a place for the bereaved to mourn the passing of a loved one.

St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center recently welcomed Father Robert Clements to the position of Director. In his new capacity, Father Clements hopes to collaborate with area parishes, diocesan offices, Catholic high schools, and youth programs to advance the Newman Center’s causes.
