Planned by Frank Shaver Allen, the renowned architect and Egyptologist, in 1889, the Patrick Haley Mansion stands at three and a half stories with spacious front and back porches, featuring limestone block walls constructed from locally-quarried materials. Designated a historic landmark by the city of Joliet, the Patrick C. Haley Mansion exemplifies the Richardson Romanesque style, a particularly rare design due to the expense of its construction. Mayor Patrick Haley, formerly the City Attorney and Ward Alderman of Illinois’ now fourth-largest city, designed his mansion to impress his many guests. The Haleys frequently entertained prominent businessmen, politicians, newspaper publishers with lavish parties. Patrick Haley’s Mansion impressed then, and it continues to do so now. Also known as the “Castle on the Hill,” the Patrick Haley Mansion has entertained guests since Mr. Haley commissioned the construction of the building over 100 years ago. The three-story, windowed tower of the Patrick C. Haley Mansion greets its guests from far up the hill. Visitors then drive up to the large stone portico boasting five large front archways, three enclosing the central entrance and one flanking either side, adorned with Gaelic insignias to celebrate the Mayor’s Irish heritage. Through the chiseled outer limestone walls, guests enter Patrick Haley Mansion’s famous ballroom and conservatory. Before returning indoors, guests can walk among the garden’s waterfalls, towering pine trees, and carefully maintained ponds and pagoda. Past the floor-to-ceiling windows, one reenters through the Mansion’s massive back porch to reveal the airy comfort and ambiance created by the building’s high ceilings and crystal chandeliers. After enjoying a custom gourmet meal prepared by the professional chefs at the Patrick Haley Mansion, guests celebrate the rest of the evening dancing on the glossy tiled floor beneath the stars, visible through the Mansion’s skylight.
