Nyron Nosworthy is an Anglo-Jamaican football defender born on October 11, 1980 in Brixton, South London. He has been nicknamed "Nuggsy" or "Nozzer" in the world of football and graduated from St. Thomas the Apostle College.
Nyron Nosworthy was selected for the Jamaica national squad on October 4, 2007 for the friendly games against Ghana and Honduras.
Nyron Nosworthy kick-started his football career as a trainee at Gillingham and made his first-team debut for the club in November 1998 as a first-half substitute against Fulham. He netted his first goal versus Scunthorpe United in the 1999-2000 season. Though Nyron Nosworthy primarily plays in the right-back for Gillingham, his occasional forays as a striker were equally successful, and he even netted a brace in a match against Crystal Palace. He established himself as a regular member of the starting line-up during the course of his tenure with Gillingham and made 174 appearances, scoring five goals.
Nyron Nosworthy switched to Sunderland on June 13, 2005 and made his Premier League debut sooner than expected owing to Stephen Wright’s departure due to an injury. He made most of his opportunity and began representing the club in most of the games as a member of the starting eleven. He gave consistent performances for Sunderland after, Roy Keane, the club’s new manager, shifted his position from full-back to centre-half in the beginning of 2007.
Nyron Nosworthy joined hands with new centre-back partner, Paul McShane and played brilliantly as a defender, much to the surprise of the critics, in his second Premiership season for the club. His style of play perfectly complements that of Jonny Evans, with whom he shares an excellent defensive partnership on the field. He was a part of the team that clinched the Football League Championship for the 2006-07 season and has represented the club in 90 matches, as of June 2008.
His brilliant performances fetched him the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) Fans Player of the Year award for the 2006-07 season and the 2007 North-East Football Writers' Player of the Year award (joint winner). The club also extended his contract until 2010.
Nyron Nosworthy is the ambassador for Sunderland’s anti-racism campaign, "Kick It Out" and is a staunch supporter of the English football club, Arsenal. He is also a favorite among Sunderland fans, who have composed a song, "They try to take the ball past Nyron, he says no, no, no", along the tune of Amy Winehouse's 'Rehab'.
