About Nigel Hamilton Sweeney

Sir Nigel Hamilton Sweeney is a judge of the High Court, where he is officially called The Hon. Mr. Justice Sweeny. He was born on March 18, 1954 and studied for a degree in law at the University of Nottingham. His legal studies were under Sir John Cyril Smith, who was a law professor and leading expert on criminal law in the UK.

After graduating from the Department of Law in 1975, he was called to the Bar Middle Temple in 1976. He began work as a barrister from his UK office, which was located at King’s Bench Walk 6. Later positions include that of the first Jr. prosecuting counsel to the Crown and the first Sr. prosecuting counsel to the Crown. In 2000 he earned an appointment to the Queen’s Counsel and in September 2008 he was appointed to the High Court, where he is today.

Sir Nigel Hamilton Sweeney is known for his distinguished career at the Criminal Bar, which amounts to 32 years. During that time he participated in defending and prosecuting in many of the country’s most high profile cases. One of those cases was the Chillenden Murders case in 1998 where he prosecuted 37-year-old Michael Stone of double murders. Although Stone pleaded not guilty, he was convicted by the testimony of a fellow inmate and sent to prison for life. He also appeared in the trial of the IRA Brighton bombing in 1984 and the bombings that were attempted in 2005. In 2013 he heard the trial of former MP Huhne and his former wife, Vicky Pryce and is the presiding judge in the Woolwich attack.

In his free time, Sir Nigel Hamilton Sweeney enjoys the arts and playing golf. He also takes time to visit his alma mater, Nottingham University, where he gives talks to students.
