He made his international debut for the England U21 team in February 2004, in a game against Netherlands and has won nine caps for the side, since then.

Nicky Hunt had been a big fan of the Bolton Wanderers football club right from his school days and was keen on becoming a professional football player someday. He started his football career as a defender at the Bolton Wanderers youth academy. Soon, he improved his skills and earned an opportunity to play in the senior team. At the age of seventeen, Nicky Hunt made his debut for the club in a First Division match against Sheffield United, where he came in as a substitute for Colin Hendry in the final game of the 2000-01 season. He also made two appearances in the FA Cup during the 2002-03 season, including the one against Sunderland in January 2003.

During the early 2003-04 season, Nicky Hunt became an integral part of the defense and was a regular in the first team. On August 16, 2003, he made his premiership debut for the side against Manchester United on the opening day of the 2003-04 season. Since then he has been a regular in the side and has made over a hundred appearances for the club, as of 2008.

On August 30, 2007, Nicky Hunt signed a new four year contract with Bolton Wanderers that would keep him at the club until the end of the 2010-11 season.
