With strong roots in academia, Nicholas Beim brings a unique and diversified perspective to his career in investments and venture capital funding. As a student at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Nicholas Beim completed honors and college preparatory coursework, gaining admission to the Cum Laude Society, serving as a proctor of student housing, and serving as the Captain of the Varsity Wrestling Team. After graduating from Phillips Academy, Nicholas Beim entered Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he majored in philosophy. During his tenure as an undergraduate at Stanford, Nicholas Beim took a year off to study at Moscow State University, held a post as production assistant for 60 Minutes, and contributed research for Charlie Wilson’s War. Nicholas Beim graduated with honors and distinction from Stanford University (B.A., Philosophy) in June 1993, receiving awards in the areas of philosophy (the Philip R. Rhinelander Award for Outstanding Service to or Achievement in the Department of Philosophy) and the classics (the Henry Rushton Fairclough Classics Prize) and finishing with a GPA of 4.0.
Following his graduation from Stanford, Nicholas Beim spent a period as Media Project Officer at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where he worked with a number of nonprofits and American media corporations to provide funding to the emerging media marketplace in the former Soviet Union. Soon after, Nicholas Beim won a Marshall Scholarship and attended St. Antony’s College at Oxford University, where he pursued a Master’s degree in Philosophy.
Nicholas Beim launched his career in finance as an Associate at McKinsey & Company, conducting principal investment studies and formulating strategies for companies in media, financial services, and technology. In June 1998, Nicholas Beim landed a position as Senior Associate for Goldman, Sachs & Company, where he narrowed his focus to the tech sector through his participation in the High Technology Investment Banking Group. Since December 2000, Nicholas Beim has served as General Partner at Matrix Partners in Boston, providing venture capital to Internet and software companies across the globe. Founded in 1977, Matrix Partners has been one of the top-performing venture capital firms in the world over the past two decades, Companies Matrix has invested in include Apple, SanDisk, Tivoli, Veritas, Jboss and Gilt Groupe.
