Nicholas Palmer - Professional Experience:
I have had an extremely varied managerial career having worked as a training manager, project manager and IT manager. I have developed some extremely useful transferrable skills such as budget responsibility, negotiating with contractors and third party suppliers, presentation skills, planning and time management skills as well as communicating effectively with people at all levels.
Whilst I was at the Hills Group I worked as a business analyst and trainer. This allowed me to combine my fascination with processes and getting things done effectively with understanding the needs of the users. My role was to document processes, recommending changes and improvements where applicable and to liaise with the development team. I was involved in testing software, training people to use it and project managing implementation. I was also responsible for IT training. I liaised and negotiated with software house and training providers.
As a consultant I was involved with all parts of the learning and development process from carrying out learning needs analyses to designing, creating and delivering training programmes. I have devised learning and development strategies including e-learning strategies.
At the Burnt Tree Group I had two distinct roles over the time I was there. Firstly I was an IT and Project Manager. In carrying out this role I developed a department from scratch along with an IT strategy and a number of policies and procedures including an acceptable use policy. I developed an effective support team and worked with them to develop their skills and careers. I was responsible for managing two major system implementations which included putting in completely new hardware, networks and software. I was also involved in moving offices a number of times which also involved infrastructural changes.
The second part of my role was in managing training and developing a Managment training programme. I also created induction courses and sessions on Customer Service, Communications Skills, Presentation skills and Time Management. I was able to develop Return to Work interviews and training which was specifically designed to tackle absenteeism issues. Absenteeism was significantly reduced as a result. I am passionate about developing training solutions to solve business issues or problems.
I am a Member of Institute of Training and Occupational learning well as being a member of the Institute for Learning.
