National Relief Charities is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Sherman, Texas. The company has served Native communities for 20 years, providing much-needed food, clothing, and numerous other products for about one quarter of a million American Indians per year. Not one of the philanthropic organizations that practices “dump and run,” National Relief Charities establishes partnerships with the people on the reservations, developing a mutual relationship of trust and respect and providing needed goods and services agreed upon as beneficial.
National Relief Charities collaborates with volunteer partners who live and work on reservations supplying nutritious meals at elder care facilities, churches, and youth centers. National Relief Charities also partners with local farmers and vendors to provide elderly American Indians with breakfast foods and fresh produce as well as winter safety services.
National Relief Charities provides several requested services to help American Indian communities thrive. The 501(c)(3)'s efforts to help American Indians experience more enriched lives are spread across many programs, among them the Sioux Nation Relief Fund, American Indian Education Foundation, and American Indian Relief Council. Another program, the Council of Indian Nations, is designed for Southwestern reservation communities where the needs are often tremendous. Food insecurity (the threat of hunger) is ongoing for many elderly American Indians in Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, and other communities. Through the Council of Indian Nations program, National Relief Charities helps prevent hunger and promote health among the elderly by helping program partners ensure that enough food and nutritious food can be served to elders by the Native community centers.
With a strong belief that education improves quality of life for individuals and communities, National Relief Charities, through its American Indian Education Foundation program, provides scholarships to more than 200 American Indian students each year. To ensure American Indian students in grades K-12 on reservations have the items necessary for the classroom, National Relief Charities provides program partners with basic school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, paper, and pencils for distribution to every student, facilitating for these youth a good start with which to complete school and launch their college careers.
The American Indian Relief Council (AIRC) program assists reservations in the Northern Plains with daily struggles due to inadequate resources, unemployment, and isolation. NRC's AIRC program also provides infant care supplies to American Indian mothers who participate in immunization and parenting programs. Through the American Indian Relief Council program, National Relief Charities' partners provide healthy meals to the elderly, holiday gifts for children and elders, as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas food. In addition to these services, NRC's winter weatherization and winter fuel services are made possible through its American Indian Relief Council program.
